You already have your CMTVDE, your car and your operator — but when it's time to register the vehicle, they ask for "a copy of the DUA" and you're not sure which document that is. It happens often: many people drive for years without ever noticing the official name of the paper that proves the car is theirs.
The DUA (Documento Único Automóvel) is the central piece of your vehicle's TVDE registration. In this guide we explain what it is, how it differs from the DAV, and how to hand over the correct copy to your fleet partner without delaying activation.
What is the DUA (Documento Único Automóvel)?
The DUA is the document that merges, into a single sheet, two things that used to be separate: the old ownership registration (registo de propriedade, which stated who owned the car) and the livrete (which described the vehicle's characteristics). Since 2005, these two documents have been combined into the Documento Único Automóvel.
In practice, the DUA proves two things at once:
- Who the owner is (the registration holder)
- The car's characteristics — licence plate, make, model, engine size, fuel type, date of first registration, among other data
That is why, in TVDE registration, the DUA is irreplaceable: it confirms that the car about to run Uber or Bolt trips legally exists and belongs to whoever claims to own it.
And the DAV? When the Vehicle Customs Declaration applies
The DAV — Declaração Aduaneira de Veículo (Vehicle Customs Declaration) appears when the car was imported into Portugal. It is the customs document that accompanies the legalisation process of a vehicle brought in from another country, during the phase where a Portuguese licence plate — and with it the corresponding DUA — is still pending.
In other words: the DAV is the "customs birth certificate" of an imported car. Until the legalisation process is complete, it is the DAV that documents the vehicle's legal status. Once the national plate is issued, the car gets its DUA like any other.
| DUA | DAV | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Documento Único Automóvel — proves ownership and characteristics | Declaração Aduaneira de Veículo — customs import declaration |
| When it applies | All cars with a Portuguese plate | Imported cars, during legalisation |
| Who issues it | IMT / Vehicle Registry (Conservatória do Registo Automóvel) | Tax and Customs Authority (Alfândega) |
How to hand over the DUA in TVDE registration
When registering your vehicle with the fleet partner or operator, they will ask for a copy of the DUA (or the DAV, for imported cars). And here is the most common mistake: handing over only one page or one side.
Before sending, check two points that often stall registrations:
- The name on the DUA must match the person registering the vehicle for TVDE. If the car belongs to someone else, you need documentation authorising its use.
- Ownership reservation (reserva de propriedade) — if the car is under financing, the DUA states it. In that case, authorisation from the financing entity or extra documentation may be required. Confirm with your operator before proceeding.
Once you have gathered the vehicle's documentation, the next step is to link everything to your operator and driver. That full journey is explained in our guide After the CMTVDE: how to start working in TVDE.
I lost the DUA — how to request a 2nd copy
If the document was lost or damaged, you simply cannot drive without it: you need to request a second copy (2ª via). The request is made through the IMT, the Vehicle Registry (Conservatória do Registo Automóvel) or an Espaço Registos, and in many cases it can be handled online through the "Automóvel Online" service.
This care with documentation is part of the sector's legal framework, regulated by Law 45/2018, which structures TVDE activity in Portugal and the mandatory link to a licensed operator.

Get Your Slot for €25/weekStill don't have a car for TVDE?
If you have yet to buy the vehicle — or yours doesn't meet the platforms' requirements — it's worth choosing a car that already comes with its paperwork in order and ready to work. A clean DUA, with no pending reservations, saves you days of bureaucracy.
You can buy a vehicle already prepared for TVDE instead of depending on a fleet. See the used cars available for TVDE and start with the paperwork on your side.
Don't let the document stall your start
The DUA seems like a detail, but it is what separates an approved registration from a returned process. Gather the complete copy, confirm the holder and request the 2nd copy if needed — and the rest of the registration moves fast.
At Arterian we help drivers validate their vehicle documentation before submitting, so activation happens on the first try. Get in touch and we'll check with you whether your DUA is ready.
